Frequently asked questions
What are the PST rates by province in 2026?
British Columbia charges 7% PST, Saskatchewan 6% PST, Manitoba 7% RST, and Quebec 9.975% QST — all on top of the 5% federal GST. Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia (14%), New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and PEI (15%) use a single harmonized HST instead. Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge only the 5% GST.
Why did Nova Scotia drop to 14% HST?
Nova Scotia cut its HST from 15% to 14% effective April 1, 2025 — the provincial portion fell from 10% to 9% while the 5% federal portion stayed the same. It was the province’s first HST rate change in 14 years, and the 14% rate remains in effect for 2026.
How do I reverse-calculate sales tax from a total?
Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the combined rate. For example, a $114.98 receipt in Quebec: $114.98 ÷ 1.14975 = $100.00 before tax, leaving $5.00 GST and $9.98 QST. This calculator does the reverse split for every province automatically.
Is QST charged on top of GST in Quebec?
Not anymore. Since January 1, 2013, the 9.975% QST applies to the GST-exclusive price — the same base as the GST. The odd 9.975% rate exists precisely because it keeps receipts identical to the old system, where 9.5% was charged on the price including GST.
What items are exempt from PST?
Each province sets its own exemptions. Common ones: basic groceries and prescription drugs are GST/HST zero-rated everywhere; BC exempts restaurant meals, children’s clothing and bicycles from PST; Saskatchewan and Manitoba exempt basic groceries and prescription drugs. Always check your provincial finance ministry for specifics.
