What is the difference between time-of-use (TOU) and tiered electricity rates?
Time-of-use pricing charges different rates depending on when you use electricity — off-peak (overnight and weekends) is cheapest, while on-peak weekday hours can cost twice as much. Tiered pricing charges one rate up to a monthly threshold (e.g., 1,000 kWh in Ontario) and a higher rate above it, regardless of when you use power. In Ontario you can choose between TOU, tiered, and ultra-low overnight plans; shifting laundry, dishwashing, and EV charging to off-peak hours typically saves TOU customers 10-20%.
Why do delivery charges almost double my electricity bill?
The energy charge (cents per kWh) only covers the electricity itself. Your bill also includes delivery (the poles and wires to your home), transmission, regulatory charges, and a fixed monthly customer charge that you pay even if you use nothing. In provinces like Alberta and Ontario these add-ons can roughly equal the energy charge, which is why a "12 cents/kWh" rate often works out to 20-25 cents/kWh all-in. This calculator applies typical delivery and tax factors so the estimate reflects your real bill, not just the posted rate.
What is equal billing (budget billing) and should I use it?
Equal billing spreads your estimated annual utility cost into 12 identical monthly payments, smoothing out expensive winter heating months. You pay the same amount each month, and the utility reconciles the difference against your actual usage once a year — you may owe a top-up or receive a credit. It helps with budgeting but does not reduce your total cost, and if the utility underestimates your usage you can face a large catch-up bill at reconciliation.
How do I find my kWh and m³ usage on my bill?
Look for the "Usage" or "Consumption" section. Electricity is billed in kilowatt-hours (kWh) — the bill shows your meter readings (previous and current) and the difference is your usage for the period. Natural gas is measured in cubic metres (m³); some utilities convert it to gigajoules (GJ) for billing — 1 GJ is roughly 26.85 m³ of natural gas. If your billing period is not exactly one month, divide the usage by the number of days and multiply by 30 to get a monthly figure for this calculator.
Did the carbon charge really come off natural gas bills?
Yes. The federal consumer carbon charge was set to zero effective April 1, 2025, removing roughly $300-370 per year from a typical gas-heated home’s bill. A small facility carbon charge (a fraction of a cent per m³) remains inside delivery rates, but the line item that used to add about 15 cents per m³ is gone. This calculator’s gas rates reflect post-removal pricing.
