How it works

A conversion calculator changes a measurement from one unit to another by multiplying (or dividing) by a fixed conversion factor — the ratio between the two units. The key is multiplying by a factor equal to 1 so the value's meaning doesn't change, only its units.

Worked example

  • Convert 5 miles to kilometres
  • 1 mile = 1.609 km

5 miles ≈ 8.05 kilometres.

Good to know

  • Going the other way uses the reciprocal factor (÷ 1.609 to turn km into miles).
  • Chain factors for multi-step conversions (e.g. inches → feet → metres).
  • Temperature is special — it uses a formula, not a single multiplier, because the scales have different zero points.
