General Tips
- • Run speed tests at different times to check consistency
- • Use wired connections for devices requiring stable speeds
- • Consider that WiFi speeds can be affected by distance and interference
How it works
Internet speed is measured in megabits per second (Mbps) for download and upload. This tool relates speed to real tasks — how long a download takes or how many streams a connection supports — by dividing data size by speed.
Download time
Time = file size (megabits) ÷ speed (Mbps) file MB × 8 = megabits
- speed
- connection speed in Mbps
- file size
- in megabytes (×8 for megabits)
Worked example
- Download a 2 GB game update
- Speed = 50 Mbps
- 2 GB = 16,000 megabits
- Time = 16,000 ÷ 50
≈ 320 seconds (5.3 minutes).
Good to know
- HD streaming needs ~5 Mbps per stream, 4K ~25 Mbps — multiply by simultaneous users.
- Upload speed matters for video calls, backups, and posting large files.
- Latency (ping) and jitter affect gaming and calls more than raw download speed.
