Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate income tax in Bangladesh?

First deduct the standard salary exemption — the lower of one-third of your salary income or Tk 4,50,000 — then apply the progressive slabs to the remainder. The tax-free threshold is Tk 3,75,000 in general. Above it, the next Tk 3,00,000 is taxed at 10%, the next Tk 4,00,000 at 15%, the next Tk 5,00,000 at 20%, the next Tk 20,00,000 at 25% and the remainder at 30%. The old 5% entry band has been abolished, so the first taxable taka is charged at 10%.

What is the tax-free income limit in Bangladesh?

The general tax-free threshold is Tk 3,75,000. It rises to Tk 4,25,000 for women and taxpayers aged 65 or over, Tk 5,00,000 for persons with a disability and third-gender taxpayers, and Tk 5,25,000 for gazetted war-wounded freedom fighters. These thresholds replace the general one — they do not stack on top of it. Where income exceeds the threshold, a minimum tax of Tk 5,000 applies.

What exemptions can I claim for income tax in Bangladesh?

The Income Tax Act 2023 abolished the old itemised allowances — house rent, medical and conveyance are no longer separately exempt. They were replaced by a single standard exemption on salary income: the lower of one-third of salary income or Tk 4,50,000. Separately, an investment tax rebate reduces the tax itself: it is the lowest of 3% of total income, 15% of your eligible investment (provident fund, DPS, savings certificates, life insurance and other approved instruments), or Tk 10,00,000.

When is the deadline to file income tax return in Bangladesh?

The deadline to file an income tax return in Bangladesh is November 30 each year for the previous tax year (July-June). Late filing attracts a penalty. Returns are filed with the NBR, and e-filing is available online.

Do I need to file a tax return if my income is below the threshold?

You may still need to file even if your income is below the taxable threshold if you are, for example, a government employee, own property in a city corporation area, own a motor vehicle, hold a club membership, or run a business with a trade licence.
