Under the Income Tax Act 2023 the separate house-rent, medical and conveyance exemptions no longer exist — a single exemption of the lower of ⅓ of salary income or Tk 4,50,000 applies instead. The PF contribution earns an investment tax rebate.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is net salary calculated in Bangladesh?
Net salary is gross salary minus the provident fund contribution and income tax. For the tax, annualise your recurring pay, add any festival or performance bonus once (a bonus is an annual amount, not a monthly one), then deduct the standard salary exemption — the lower of one-third of salary income or Tk 4,50,000 — and apply the progressive slabs to what remains. The itemised house-rent, medical and conveyance exemptions were abolished by the Income Tax Act 2023.
What is the standard provident fund contribution rate in Bangladesh?
The standard provident fund contribution is 10% from employees and 10% from employers; some organisations contribute up to 12%. The employee's contribution is a payroll deduction, not an income exemption — but it does count as eligible investment for the investment tax rebate, which is the lowest of 3% of total income, 15% of the eligible investment, or Tk 10,00,000.
What allowances are common in Bangladeshi salary structure?
Common components are House Rent Allowance (typically 40-50% of basic salary), Medical Allowance, Conveyance Allowance, Food Allowance and Communication Allowance. Note that since the Income Tax Act 2023 these are simply part of taxable salary income — restructuring pay between them no longer changes your tax, because the itemised exemptions were replaced by one standard exemption of min(one-third of salary, Tk 4,50,000).
What is considered a good salary in Bangladesh?
A good salary varies by location and experience. In Dhaka, 35,000+ BDT monthly is considered comfortable, while in other cities 25,000+ BDT is adequate. Entry-level roles typically range from 15,000-25,000 BDT, mid-level 30,000-60,000 BDT, and senior positions 70,000-150,000+ BDT monthly.
When do employees get bonus payments in Bangladesh?
Employees are typically entitled to festival bonuses twice a year — usually at Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha. The customary minimum is one month's basic salary per year, often split into two payments. Many companies also pay performance or profit-sharing bonuses. Enter a bonus as an annual figure: it is added once to annual income, not multiplied by twelve.
