Date Calculation Tips

  • • Business days exclude weekends (Saturday & Sunday)
  • • Leap years have 366 days instead of 365
  • • Time zones can affect date calculations
  • • Consider holidays for accurate business day counts
  • • Use ISO 8601 date format (YYYY-MM-DD) for consistency

How it works

A date calculator does arithmetic with dates: the number of days (or weeks, months, years) between two dates, or a new date after adding or subtracting a span. It accounts for varying month lengths and leap years so the count is exact.

Date arithmetic

Days between = later date − earlier date New date = start ± number of days
start / end
the two calendar dates

Worked example

  • From January 1 to March 1 (non-leap year)
  1. January has 31 days, February 28

59 days between the two dates.

Good to know

  • Leap years add February 29, so spans crossing them are one day longer.
  • “Months” are ambiguous because they vary in length — date math usually counts exact days.
  • Whether you count the start day, end day, or both depends on the use (e.g. rental days vs nights).
