Flooring Tips
- • Acclimate flooring materials 48-72 hours before installation
- • Order 10-15% extra material for future repairs
- • Check subfloor moisture levels before installation
- • Plan installation direction for best visual flow
- • Leave expansion gaps around perimeter
How it works
A flooring calculator finds the square footage of a room and how much material to buy including waste. You compute area room by room, sum them, and add a waste percentage for cuts and mistakes.
Flooring needed
Area = length × width Order = area × (1 + waste%)
- length, width
- room dimensions in feet
- waste%
- extra for cuts (5–10%, more for diagonal/patterns)
Worked example
- Room 12 ft × 15 ft
- 10% waste
- Area = 12 × 15 = 180 ft²
- Order = 180 × 1.10
≈ 198 ft² of flooring to buy.
Good to know
- Buy a little extra from the same lot — dye/batch numbers can vary between production runs.
- Diagonal layouts and busy patterns waste more material; bump the waste factor up.
- Account for transitions, thresholds, and underlayment separately.
