How it works
A grade calculator finds your overall grade by weighting each component (tests, homework, projects) by its share of the final grade. Multiply each score by its weight, add them up, and divide by the total weight.
Weighted grade
Final = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weights
- score
- grade on each component (%)
- weight
- how much that component counts
Worked example
- Tests 90% (weight 50%)
- Homework 80% (weight 20%)
- Final exam 85% (weight 30%)
- (90×0.5) + (80×0.2) + (85×0.3)
- = 45 + 16 + 25.5
Final grade = 86.5%.
Good to know
- Weights should sum to 100% (or 1.0); otherwise divide by the total weight you have.
- To find the score needed on a final, solve for the missing component given your target.
- Dropping a low score, if the syllabus allows it, can meaningfully raise the weighted total.
