How it works

An hours calculator totals time worked from clock-in and clock-out times, subtracting breaks. It converts each shift to hours and minutes (or decimal hours for payroll) and sums them across the period.

Hours worked

Worked = (clock out − clock in) − breaks Decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60
clock in/out
shift start and end times
breaks
unpaid break time

Worked example

  • In 8:00 AM, out 4:30 PM
  • 30-minute unpaid lunch
  1. Gross = 8.5 hours
  2. Minus 0.5 break

8 hours worked.

Good to know

  • Convert minutes to decimal (15 min = 0.25 h) for pay calculations.
  • Hours over 40 in a week may qualify for overtime at 1.5×.
  • Round consistently — many employers round to the nearest quarter hour.
