How it works
An hours calculator totals time worked from clock-in and clock-out times, subtracting breaks. It converts each shift to hours and minutes (or decimal hours for payroll) and sums them across the period.
Hours worked
Worked = (clock out − clock in) − breaks Decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60
- clock in/out
- shift start and end times
- breaks
- unpaid break time
Worked example
- In 8:00 AM, out 4:30 PM
- 30-minute unpaid lunch
- Gross = 8.5 hours
- Minus 0.5 break
8 hours worked.
Good to know
- Convert minutes to decimal (15 min = 0.25 h) for pay calculations.
- Hours over 40 in a week may qualify for overtime at 1.5×.
- Round consistently — many employers round to the nearest quarter hour.
