How it works

Square footage is just area in square feet: length times width for a rectangular space. For a whole home or an L-shaped room, you split it into rectangles, find each one's square footage, and add them together. It's the number flooring, paint, and real-estate pricing are all based on.

Square footage

Sq ft = length (ft) × width (ft) Total = sum of each rectangle

room dimensions in feet

Worked example

  • A room 12 ft × 15 ft
  1. Sq ft = 12 × 15

180 square feet.

Good to know

  • Convert inches to feet first (divide by 12) — measuring one side in feet and another in inches gives a wrong answer.
  • For materials like flooring or tile, add 5–10% for cuts and waste on top of the bare square footage.
  • Break an irregular floor plan into rectangles, compute each, and sum — much simpler than one complex shape.
