How it works

A time calculator adds or subtracts spans of time and converts between units. The trick is that time is base-60 for minutes and seconds: 60 seconds make a minute, 60 minutes make an hour — so you carry over at 60, not 100.

Adding time

Carry over at 60: 90 minutes = 1 hour 30 minutes
h : m : s
hours, minutes, seconds

Worked example

  • 2:45 + 1:30 (hours:minutes)
  1. Minutes: 45 + 30 = 75 → 1 hour 15 min
  2. Hours: 2 + 1 + 1

4 hours 15 minutes.

Good to know

  • Convert to a single unit (all minutes or all seconds) to make arithmetic easy, then convert back.
  • Crossing midnight, add 24 hours before subtracting to avoid negatives.
  • Decimal hours (1.5 h) and clock time (1:30) are different formats — 1.5 h = 1 h 30 m.
