How it works
A tip calculator multiplies the bill by your chosen tip percentage to get the tip, adds it to the bill for the total, and divides by the number of people to split it evenly. The only judgment call is which amount you tip on โ the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total.

Worked example
- Bill = $80
- Tip = 18%
- Splitting between 4 people
- Tip = 80 ร 0.18 = $14.40
- Total = 80 + 14.40 = $94.40
- Per person = 94.40 รท 4
$14.40 tip, $94.40 total, $23.60 each.
Good to know
- Convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal โ tipping on the taxed total quietly adds a couple of percent.
- US norms for sit-down service run 15โ20% (20%+ for great service); counter service and many countries tip little or nothing.
- For a quick 20%, take 10% (move the decimal one place left) and double it.
