Electron Configuration Chart
Every element's electron configuration in shorthand and full notation, plus electrons per shell.
An electron configuration is a map of where an atom keeps its electrons. It is the single most useful thing to know about an element, because everything else — the charge it forms, the bonds it makes, the group it sits in — follows from the arrangement of the outermost few.
How to read one
Take 1s² 2s² 2p⁶. The number is the shell (roughly, how far out), the letter is the shape of the orbital, and the superscript is how many electrons are in it. Each orbital type has a fixed capacity: s holds 2, p holds 6, d holds 10 and f holds 14.
The filling order
Electrons fill the lowest-energy orbital available, and energies overlap between shells — which is why 4s fills before 3d:
1s → 2s → 2p → 3s → 3p → 4s → 3d → 4p → 5s → 4d → 5p → 6s → 4f → 5d → 6p → 7s → 5f → 6d → 7p

Configurations that are predicted, not measured
For the superheavy elements past roentgenium, nobody has ever had enough atoms in one place long enough to measure a spectrum. Their configurations are calculated from relativistic quantum mechanics and are marked as predicted on their individual pages. They are good predictions — but they are predictions.

What is an electron configuration?
An electron configuration says which orbitals an atom's electrons occupy. Reading 1s² 2s² 2p⁶: the number is the shell, the letter is the orbital type, and the superscript is how many electrons are in it. Add the superscripts and you get the atom's total electron count, which for a neutral atom equals its atomic number.
What order do electrons fill orbitals in?
By energy, not by shell number, which is why 4s fills before 3d. The usual order is 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, 7p. Each s orbital holds 2 electrons, each p set 6, each d set 10 and each f set 14. This is the aufbau principle — German for "building up".
What is noble gas notation?
A shorthand that replaces the filled inner shells with the noble gas that has that exact configuration. Iron's full configuration is 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 4s² 3d⁶; since argon is 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶, iron can be written [Ar] 4s² 3d⁶. It is the same information, with the part that does no chemistry folded away.
Why do chromium and copper break the pattern?
A half-filled or completely filled d subshell is unusually stable, so chromium borrows an electron from 4s to reach [Ar] 4s¹ 3d⁵ rather than 4s² 3d⁴, and copper does the same to reach [Ar] 4s¹ 3d¹⁰. Several other transition and inner-transition metals show similar exceptions — the aufbau order is a very good rule, not a law.
How does the periodic table itself show electron configuration?
The table is literally a map of orbital filling. The two columns on the left are the s-block, the six on the right are the p-block, the ten in the middle are the d-block and the two rows below are the f-block. An element's period is its outermost shell number, and its position within the block tells you how many electrons are in that subshell.
